Born Douglas Meijer in 1955, he is the second son of Fredrik Meijer and the grandson of Hendrik Meijer, the founder of the super center retailing chain in 1934. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned his bachelor of science degree. He went to work in the family business right after graduation and has serves in various management positions.

In 2003, Doug and his brother, Hank, were appointed as Co-Chairmen of the Meijer firm. Currently, he is also the current director of the company.
