Herbert Smith started his finance business in the 1950s working door to door and was joined in 1974 by his son, Stewart. In 1997, the Smiths moved into the pawnbroking business as a franchisee of John Ramsden's Pawnbrokers. Five years later, they bought out the franchisor and expanded rapidly across Teesside. Ramsden's Financial made a $6.61 million profit on $42.14 million in sales in the year 2010.
