John was born in Detroit, United States and went to Allen Park High School. His parents and the rest of the family are from the village of Poulata on the Cefalonia Island in Greece. In 1983, he joined Polo Ralph Lauren, but moved on to Calvin Klein in 1990. At Calvin Klein, he was appointed as the head of menswear and was in charge of the launch of men’s collection by the brand. John decided to return to Polo Ralph Lauren, but this time he was heading the menswear division. In 1995, he established the Polo Jeans Company.

Varvatos, however, soon decided to start his own brand – it was named “John Varvatos Fashion House”. The first clothing line was introduced in 2000 in New York. It became a big success. His brand now also includes belts, footwear, handbags, watches, fragrances, and eye-wear. Eventually, he opened his solo boutique in Soho.

In 2009 John started hosting a talk show over the radio called, “New York Nights” on Sirius XM’s The Spectrum Channel. The show included songs and interviews of artists who influenced John and his work. In 2012, John was a part of “Fashion Star” on NBC, a reality show that searches for the next big fashion brand. John admitted that his interest in rock ‘n' roll has led him to the fashion world. Advertisement campaigns for the brand have featured Iggy Pop, Velvet Revolver, Alice Cooper, Chris Cornell, The Roots, Dave Matthews, and Green Day.

John Varvatos has received many awards for his work. A Limited Edition Chrysler 300 automobile was launched in his name in 2013.
