It sells health IT systems such as electronic health records to doctor’s office and hospitals. His business has been consistently profitable since it was publicly offered in 1986. Its revenues and shares have climbed up because of the 2009 stimulus law. Such law has instituted penalties for health systems that did not make enough progress in going digital.

In 2012, Cerner Corporation has reported its profits of $396 million on sales of $2.67 billion. It was started in 1979 by Neal Patterson together with his two colleagues from Arthur Andersen’s consulting business. Currently, he serves as its CEO and president.
