Trae tha Truth, or simply Trae, started his career in the Houston rap scene in the late 1990s. He started by guest rapping on the songs of Z-Ro. He first worked on “Look What You Did To Me”. Trae later worked on solo albums in the 2000s. He rapped for songs such as Restless, Same Thing Different Day, Losing Composure and Life Goes On.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding him. In one of his music events in 2009, there was even a gun fire. On the local radio station KBXX 97.9, he said that he was not responsible for this violence, but the DJ of the station said that his lyrical content was a party to the violence. Because of this, the radio station did not play his music. It also sacked any DJ who would play his songs. He filed a lawsuit against the station in 2010.

On 20th June, 2012, Trae was shot on the shoulder outside a Houston strip club. He was immediately taken to the hospital. His condition was later declared to be stable. His two friends, Dinky D and Poppa C, died from the firing. There was another woman too who was a victim of this firing. According to police reports, 20 gunshots were fired by many shooters. Trae said that they left him bleeding at the hospital for many hours before starting the treatment.
