Dalton was born in Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire. His father was a captain in the Special Operations Executive during the World War II. His father became an advertising executive after the birth of Timothy.

He joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1966. Timothy has one son named Alexander, who was born on 7th August 1977 from the Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva. He was in a relationship with an English actress Vanessa Redgrave. Timothy Dalton has however remained unmarried.
