Steve was born in Miami, and he grew up in Newport Beach, California. He graduated in 1995 from Newport Harbor High School. As a child, he was into badminton. His father was a former Japanese wrestler. He is the third child – there are two elder sisters. Steve however grew up with his grandfather, mother and his two elder sisters. Steve had two B.A’s, one in Women’s Studies and the other in Sociology. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. In college he used to play for various bands.

Steve started his own label, the “Dim Mak Records” in 1996. The label has till now released music from other house artists such as the Bloody Beetroots, Mustard Pimp, MSTRKRFT, Scanners, Mystery Jets, Klaxons and many more. Steve is also a DJ and a club promoter. He has worked with Blake Miller to produce remixes. Miller and Aoki work under the moniker Weird Science. His debut mix album, Pillowface and his Airplane Chronicles were released in January 2008. He has also made an Essential Mix which was aired on 2nd August 2008 on BBC Radio 1. His solo album “Wonderland” was released on January 2012. The album features different musicians and vocalists.

He performs 250 shows a year. Steve Aoki gets a lot of support from colleges. In spring 2012, he toured more than 55 cities across the United States and Canada.
