Born Adam Spiegel on October 22, 1969 in Rockville, Maryland, he went to Walt Whitman High School while spending time at a Bethesda community store. The owner, Mike Henderson, gave him the name Spike Jonze, which he uses professionally, in reference to Spike Jones.

Jonze started his career as a photographer for Freestylin’ Magazine and Transworld Skateboarding. He also co-founded the youth culture magazine Dirt. By the beginning of the 90’s he was into music videos and films. He began shooting street skateboarding films, including the influential Video Days.

Spike Jonze got his first big break in 1997 when he acted in the movie The Game. After this came Three Kings in 1999. However, it was with the making of Being John Malkovich in 1999 that he was able to establish himself as a director. The movie got him an Oscar Nomination for best director. Since then he has been known as a director who can surprise the audiences with his great ideas and creative techniques.

Jonze earned all his fortune by acting, producing and directing in music videos, commercials, television, and films. He is also the co-founder of Directors Label. His career has been quite extensive and have created many commercials and music videos and then moved on to creating TV and feature movies.
