Her father, Syl Johnson, is a record producer and R&B soul singer as well. According to her, she was greatly influenced by artists like Tina Turner, Mavis Staples, Al Green, The Dells and Aretha Franklin.

After signing to Jive Records, Syleena Johnson's first album was released.
