Branch states that she draws her musical influences from The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, older country music, and classical music. She then went on to form the country music duo named The Wreckers in 2005 and produced a Grammy-nominated single, "Leave the Pieces." The group eventually disbanded as they pursued their respective solo careers. She also branched into acting, with several acting stints in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Dreams. She released extended plays in 2010 and 2011. On April 7, 2017, she released her third solo album, Hopeless Romantic.

In 2004, Michelle Branch got married to her bass player, Teddy Landau, but the couple eventually divorced. She is now married to American musician and producer Patrick Carney who serves as the drummer for The Black Keys, a blues-rock band from Akron, Ohio.
