Glitter's fall from grace was what BBC described as spectacular and dramatic. In the late 1990s, his image experienced irreparable tarnish because of his 1997 arrest and 1999 conviction. It happened in the United Kingdom after downloading thousands of child pornography. He also became charged with sexual activity with an underage girl in the 1970s. Glitter also faced deportation and criminal charges from countries like Cambodia and Vietnam because of suspected child abuse. He also became guilty of obscene acts with minors in Cambodia in 2002. At the end of his sentence, he deported back to Britain and went to the Sex Offenders' Register for life. Last February 2015, he was guilty of attempted rape and indecent assault leading to a sentence of 16 years in prison.

Glitter was once British music history's best-loved entertainers. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian now describes him a public hate figure with a net worth of $8 million.
