March 12, 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. After attending Lincoln High School, he went to Ripon College where he finished a degree on Psychology. He then attended the University of Iowa where he completed his master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation.

In 1975, he was discovered by Warner Bros Records and not long after, his first album was released. Titled We Got By, the album earned him international prominence and a German Grammy Award. His second album, Glow, also earned him a Germany Grammy Award.

Throughout his entire career as a musician, Jarreau was able to record and release a total of 15 albums plus three live albums. He received seven Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Best Recording for Children, Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male), Best Jazz Vocal Performance (Male), Best R&B Vocal Performance (Male), and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance categories.
