Born in May 1948, Ward grew up listening to songs with the beat of the drum on the background. He learned how to play the drums and joined the band The Rest in the 1960s. Along with another Black Sabbath member Tony Iommi, Ward joined the band Mythology before Black Sabbath was formed.

From 1970 to 1980, Ward played on every song of his band. By 1980, Ward suddenly disappeared after having a series of panic attacks due to drinking while on gigs. He returned to Black Sabbath in 1983. He left the band again for health concerns and returned again in 1985. At the peak of his career, Ward was on a series of concert tours with Black Sabbath. He also enjoyed huge income from album sales. His band members were proud to say that Ward had already quit smoking and gave up alcohol.
