Alan Charles Jardine was born in Lima, Ohio. However, his family moved to San Francisco and eventually to Hawthorne, California. While he was at Hawthorne High School, he befriended fellow football player Brian Wilson and saw Brian and his brother Carl Wilson singing at a school assembly. He attended the Ferris State University from 1960 to 1961 academic year. Afterwards, Alan registered as a student at El Camino College in 1961. He reunited with Brian and came up with the idea of forming a band as they worked through harmony ideas with each other in the college's music room. The primary musical interest of Jardine was folk, and Jardine studied the guitar and banjo to play folk music. The Beach Boys formed at Wilson's home. He initially tried to push the band toward folk, but they eventually went in favor of rock 'n' roll.

Jardine was an all-rounder on string instruments and played the stand-up bass on the first recording of the Beach Boys' "Surfin." He briefly departed the band in early 1962 to dabble with a career in Los Angeles' air industry. Because of Brian Wilson's request, Jardine fully rejoined the Beach Boys during summer of 1963. He worked with the band alongside guitarist David Marks until October 1963. As of the moment, his net worth is at $40 million.
