Born Brian David Vig on August 2, 1955 in Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA, he was nicknamed Butch as a child after his father gave him a crew cut. He studied piano for six years, but swapped his piano for a $60 drum kit after he saw The Who perform on The Smothers Brothers.

Vig attended the University of Wisconsin and studied film direction. He has performed in local bands Spooner and Fire Town, then later set up his own studio, called Smart Studios, in town. With this, he got the opportunity to work with some of the biggest music artists in the Indie region such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, David Grohl and The Foo Fighters, and Nirvana. He also produced the featured song in the Twilight Saga film Eclipse, "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)" by the English rock band Muse.

After making his name as a producer, Butch Vig returned to perform with Garbage, a band that sold 17 million records during a ten-year period. When Garbage took a hiatus, he returned to full-time producing. In 2012, he was ranked #9 in the Top 50 Greatest Producers Ever by NME.
