He was named after Tupac Amaru, an 18th-century South American revolutionary who was executed after leading an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule. He began his music career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for Digital Underground, an alternative hip hop group. He eventually went on as a solo artist.

Also known by his stage name 2pac and briefly Makaveli, the themes of his songs are highly political and socially conscious.
