Darryl "D.M.C." Matthews McDaniels was born on May 31, 1964 in New York City, New York, United States. Since 1992, he has been married to Zuri L. McDaniels. Inspired by the recordings of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, McDaniels is a certified self-taught disc jockey. Eventually, he became known with his stage name "Grandmaster Get High.”
In 1984, the trio composed of Joseph "Run" Simmons, Jam-Master Jay and Darryl McDaniels released their first self-titled album which eventually became a success in the hip hop industry. The group’s third album titled Raising Hell peaked at #6 on Billboard 200. It also peaked at #1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums which made Run-D.M.C. as one of the most popular hip hop groups during that time. However, amidst the success, McDaniels started building his reputation as a heavy drinker. In fact, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and public intoxication in the past.
