Parr worked for WH Smith before starting Parragon Book Service, a publishing company that sells its titles in supermarkets, with partner Paul Anderson. Parr was managing director of Bath-based Parragon with a 45% stake. In 1994, 3i, the private equity group, paid £10 million for a 10% stake. The company was sold for £100 million in 2000 to DC Thomson, netting Parr £45 million. He has some small property and investment operations.
