Jerome S. Moss was born on May 8, 1935 in Bronx, New York. He graduated with a degree in English from Brooklyn College. He also had a stint in the army. His music career began when he promoted the 16 Candles hit for the band The Crest on Coed Records.

In 1962, he and Alpert formed Carnival Records after Moss moved to California in 1960. The two ran the company from an office in Alpert’s garage. However, they found out that the name was already taken so they renamed their new-found company A&M Records.

A&M Records was bought by PolyGram and the two went to form a new record label, Almo Sounds, in 1994. The label still continues to operate today. In 2006, Moss and Alpert were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as nonperformers.
