Wan James is a Malaysian-born Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer who has an estimated net worth of $50 million. Wan was born on February 27, 1977 and made feature films on the independent market before he gained success in the mainstream film industry. His first feature film, Stygian, made with Shannon Young, won the Best Guerrilla Film category at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in the year 2000, giving him recognition as a producer.

Along with screenwriter friend Leigh Whannel, Wan began writing the script for a horror film. When it was completed, they both wanted to select an excerpt and it was later known to be the movie Saw.
