Wan James is a Malaysian-born Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer who has an estimated net worth of $50 million. Wan was born on February 27, 1977 and made feature films on the independent market before he gained success in the mainstream film industry. His first feature film, Stygian, made with Shannon Young, won the Best Guerrilla Film category at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in the year 2000, giving him recognition as a producer.

Along with screenwriter friend Leigh Whannel, Wan began writing the script for a horror film. When it was completed, they both wanted to select an excerpt and it was later known to be the movie Saw. Composer Charlie Clouser then helped him by composing the score for the film together with a few stand-in actors. This project led him to grow popular in the mainstream film setting. He is also known for inventing Billy the Puppet while he continued to executive produced the other Saw sequels.

James has also directed Death Sentence, Insidious, Dead Silence, The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring 2 and Aquaman. Wan entered into negotiations with Universal pictures in April, 2013 to direct the seventh installment of Fast and Furious film series after he was included in the directorial shortlist. It was confirmed that Wan would direct the movie and lead the franchise into a new chapter.
