Ray was born on 21st June 1944 in Fortis Green, London. He has seven siblings, which include six sisters and a younger brother Dave. He went to the William Grimshaw Secondary Modern School. He was an art student at the Hornsey College of Art.
In 1973, Ray attempted suicide following the breakup of his marriage. Davies has been married three times and has four daughters – Louisa, Victoria, Natalie and Eva. He was romantically involved with Chrissie Hynde.
