He became famous for his skills using the electric guitar and proficiency as a bass, resonator, lap steel, and acoustic guitarist. Aside from these, he is also an accomplished vocalist and pianist. He played a multitude of genres that included country, classical, new-age, folk, soul, jazz fusion, rock, and blues. The magazine Guitar Player called him "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet."

Johnson became famous for playing the lightly modified stock Gibson ES-355 and Fender Stratocasters electric guitars through a triple amp setup that has Marshall, Dumble, and Fender amplifiers. He has the tendency to swap out the bridge pickup in some of his Stratocasters for the DiMarzio HS-2 pickups since these do not hum as much as the standard single-coils. Johnson was also able to play with other guitar bands like Charvel, Jackson, Rickenbacker, and Robin.
