She was born as Joan Smalls Rodriguez on July 11, 1988 in Hatillo Puerto Rico. After graduating as magna cum laude from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico with a degree in Psychology, Joan Smalls moved to New York to pursue a career in modeling. In 2007, she signed with Elite Model Management. After two years, she was signed by the IMG Models worldwide which led to her mainstream success. In 2010, she was signed by the Givenchy to the Riccardo Tisci's Spring/Summer Haute Couture show.

Eventually, she was able to wear the creations of other famous designers and fashion houses which include Louis Vuitton, Prada, Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, Lavin, Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dior, Balenciaga, Vendi, and Versace, among others. In 2010, her modeling career with Victoria's Secret commenced. She later appeared in Victoria Secret's fashion shows from 2011 through 2014.
