In 1965, he started his music career by playing in the band “Terry Knight and the Pack”. The following year he was playing for “The Bossmen” and then the Pack in 1967. After this, Mark formed his own band and named it “Grand Funk Railroad” with Mel Schacher on the bass guitar and Don Brewer as the guitarist. In 1973, Craig Frost joined the band as the keyboard player. His best known composition was “I am your Captain closer to home”, which became an epic in 1970. The band became very popular soon. On Mark’s 25th birthday, the band stood at #1 on the Hot 100 list.
In 1976, Grand Funk got disbanded and the next year, Mark came out with his solo album and his second album “No Frills” in 1978. In 1981, Don Brewer and Farner launched a new “Grand Funk” lineup. In the late 1990s, he reunited with the Grand Funk, but left after 3 years to restart his own solo musical career.
He is presently touring with his band N’Rg and plays a mixture of his own composition and also Grand Funk songs. Farner has suffered from severe heart problems for the last 8 year and had a pacemaker installed in 2012. In 1999, he was honoured with the Lakota Sioux Elders Honor. He has received many other accolades for his contributions to the field of music.
