The Teens Unite Fighting Cancer charity was founded by Millen, 49, who is also involved with a vocational project for the charity Hope HIV, which works with children in sub-Saharan Africa affected by the Aids pandemic. Millen considers herself a designer first and a retailer second.
She started out selling shirts when she was at Medway College in Rochester. Then, on holiday in Morocco, she met Kevin Stanford, who became her business partner and later her husband, although they are now divorced.
They opened their first shop in Maidstone, before an approach from the successful shoe chain, Pied a Terre, who asked Millen to produce a clothing line for them. The business, called Karen Millen, took off and when she sold a 40% stake to Icelandic investors. She shared a £54m payout when all but 15% of the rest of the shares were later sold.
