He got married to Judy Helkenberg and they have a son named William Jacob Busey from the marriage. In 2010, his girlfriend Steffanie Sampson gave birth to a boy – he was named Luke Sampson Busey.
Gary had a serious accident in December 1988 when he was driving a motorcycle without a helmet. His brain was severely injured. Some people believed that he had suffered permanent damage. Gary was however able to prove them wrong. The Depakote medication helped him recover and return to acting.
