Samuel Alexander Mendes was born on August 1, 1965 in Reading, Berkshire. He is the son of Valerie, who used to write books for children, and Jameson, a University professor. While his mother is an English Jew, Sam’s dad was from Trinidad. He has Portuguese and Italian blood. Sam’s grandfather was Alfred Hubert Mendes, an author from Trinidad. He showed early signs of success when he was studying at the Magdalen College School and Peterhouse in Cambridge. As a member of the Marlowe Society, Sam directed many plays. He even worked as the director in a Cyrano de Bergerac production where one of the cast members was Tom Hollander.
