Born in The Bronx, New York City, New York on July 19, 2016, Garry Kent Marshall went to De Witt Clinton High School and later attended Northwestern University. While at NU, he wrote a sports column for The Daily Northwestern. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a writer for performers such as comedians Phil Foster and Joey Bishop in the 60s. His first directing credit is Young Doctors in Love in 1982, but his first breakout success was Pretty Woman, which was released in 1990.

Marshall also appeared in several TV shows over the years, including recent hits like Monk, Brothers and Sisters, and Louie (with Louis CK). He has made a career in directing hit movies such as Runaway Bride, Mother's Day, Beaches, The Princess Diaries, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Raising Helen, Valentine's Day, and New Year's Eve.
