American rocker Chris Cornell, lead vocalist of Soundgarden and Audioslave, has an estimated net worth of $60 million. Considered as one of the world's 50 richest musicians, he ranks in at number 40. Tied with Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge of Blink 182, along with Chris Martin of Coldplay even though Cornell has stated in several interviews "making music was never about money".
Born Christoper John Boyle on July 20, 1964 in Seattle, Washington to Ed Boyle and Karen Cornell, Chris suffered from severe anxiety as a young man, and used music as a tool to control it. His first band was a cover band called "The Shemps" during the early 80s. The band which also included his friends Hiro Yamamoto and Kim Thayil, broke up almost as soon as it started. Only to reform in 1984 under the new name "Soundgarden."
Originally, he played guitar and drums in the band, until Scott Sundquist took over as drummer, allowing Chris to focus on singing. It was his singing that made all the difference. In 1990, the band received a Grammy nomination for best metal performance, and was signed to A&M Records. Several different bands and a solo act later, his music career is doing great. But his net worth is mostly due to writing music, and not his band's performances. Chris Cornell has scored music for several big movies, including Casino Royal and The Avengers.
