She was born on November 10, 1977 as Brittany Bertolotti in Georgia. When Brittany's parents divorced two years into her life, her mother took her and raised her on her own in New Jersey. In the 1990s, she and her mother moved to Los Angeles, California, so Murphy could pursue an acting career. Murphy starred in movies such as Clueless, Just Married, and Girl, Interrupted. She had a side career as a singer, and was in the band Blessed Soul with actor Eric Balfour. She lent her singing voice to the children's movie Happy Feet, and recorded a song called Faster Kill Pussycat with Paul Oakenfold in 2006. She was also cast in two music videos during her music career, in a Luscious Jackson video, and a Tears For Fears video.

Murphy died in 2009. Despite claims of an accidental drug overdose, she died from Pneumonia.
