Author Terry McMillan is an American author with an estimated net worth is $40 million. She was born on October 18, 1951 in Port Huron, Michigan. She studied journalism at the University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 1977. She later attended Columbia University where she enrolled at the Master of Fine Arts program in film. Her first book, Mama, came out in 1987. Her talent in writing led her to be one of the most celebrated writers in the United States in the following years as her works are characterized by relatable female protagonists.

McMillan soared to fame with her third novel "Waiting to Exhale", which was the New York Times Bestseller for several months in 1995. It was also made into a movie directed by Forest Whitaker and starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon. Her other novel "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" was also adapted into a movie and it starred Bassett and Taye Diggs. In 2010, she published "Getting to Happy", which was the much awaited sequel to "Waiting to Exhale".

McMillan also wrote the novel "Disappearing Acts", which was subsequently produced as a direct-to-cable feature. It was directed by by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starred Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan. Her novel "A Day Late and a Dollar Short" was brought to television audiences, starring Whoopi Goldberg and other big names, including Ving Rhames, Tichina Arnold, Mekhi Phifer, Anika Noni Rose, and Kimberly Elise. She also wrote "The Interruption of Everything".
