About Harvey Pekar

Harvey Lawrence Pekar was a US music critic, media personality and an underground comic writer who had an estimated net worth of $12 million.

He was mainly known for his autobiographical comic series – American Splendor. In 2003, a movie was made inspired from the comic series with the same name.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and belonged to a very poor and simple family that owned a grocery store. They used to stay above the store in a small place. Harvey has confessed that he was not that close to his parents but admired them for their mutual love and respect which they had for each other.

As a child, he had no friends as the neighborhood in which Pekar lived was inhabited by black kids and he was the only odd one out. Because of this, he was left ignored, and a sense of inferiority started building in him. He served the United States Navy for some time later, after which, Harvey started doing some odd jobs. He was hired as a clerk in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital where he continued to work even after becoming famous. He resigned from here in 2001 and refused all promotions while working there.

He married thrice in his life and with his last wife, he had collaborated a graphic novel autobiography describing his experience in fighting deadly cancer. It was titled American Splendor. His comic book success saw him getting many chances in television, theatre, and also in the music field.

Harvey Pekar died on July 12th 2010 at the age of 70. At the time of his death, Harvey was working on the book “The Unrepentant Marxist”. It will probably never be released.
