Augusten Burroughs is an American writer and he has an estimated net worth of $5 million. Born Christopher Richter Robison on October 23, 1965, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he legally changed his name to Augusten Xon Burroughs at the age of 18, a year after he obtained a GED. He went to Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as a pre-med student, but he dropped out before the first semester ended. He then moved to New York and worked for a Manhattan-based advertising company.
Burroughs is known for his New York Times bestselling memoir Running with Scissors (2002). His worked chronicled most of his childhood experiences and it was later made into a film with the same title. He wrote another memoir, Dry (2003), which describes his experience during and after treatment for alcoholism. Two collections of memoir essays, Magical Thinking (2003) and Possible Side Effects (2006), then followed. He also wrote his first novel, Sellevision (2000), which is currently under production as a feature film.
Burroughs's writing has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers around the world including The New York Times, House & Garden, BlackBook, New York Magazine, The Times, Bark, Attitude, and Out. He focuses on subjects that include advertising, psychiatrists, religious families, and home shopping networks. He also writes a monthly column for the men's magazine Details.
