Among its past members are Mark Stone, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone.
Born Alexander Arthur van Halen on May 8, 1953 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, Alex co-founded Van Halen together with younger brother and called it Mammoth. When the family moved to Pasadena, California in 1962, both brothers became naturalized U.S. citizens. They were also both trained as classical pianist during their childhood. Alex practiced guitar, but later became more skillful with the drums which eventually became his role in the band.
Gene Simmons of the band KISS discovered their impressive performance and he willingly paid for their first demo tape. Their first self-titled album launching under Warner Brothers on 1978 became a big hit and was considered one of the best and most successful debut albums that brought the essence of hard rock into the musical mainstream.
