Mary Nell Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas, U.S. In 1980, she married the actor Malcolm McDowell. The couple divorced ten years later. Together, Mary and Malcolm had two children named Lilly and Charles. In 1995, she married Ted Danson who is also an actor.

Mary Steenburgen's acting break came in 1978 when she was discovered by the director Jack Nicholson. She was selected to become the female lead on the director's second film titled Goin' South.  A year later, she took the lead role on the film Time After Time.
