Born Davenie Johanna Heatherton on September 4, 1944 in Rockville Centre, New York, she attended St. Agnes Cathedral School, a Catholic grade and high school. Her father Ray Heatherton was a Broadway star for Babes in Arms and a television pioneer.

Heatherton began her professional career as a child actress in 1959. She was a member of the ensemble and an understudy in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. She received her first sustained national exposure in the same year as a semi-regular on The Perry Como Show where she played an exuberant teenager with a perpetual crush on Perry Como. She also made recurring appearances on several variety shows such as The Dean Martin Show, The Andy Williams Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.

Joey Heatherton first appeared on television on her father’s show The Merry Mailman, a popular children’s show in New York. She also appeared in TV dramas such as The Virginian, The Doctors and the Nurses and Route 66. She had guest starring roles in Arrest and Trial and Breaking Point. She was also included in the films Twilight of Honor with Richard Chamberlain and Nick Adams, Where Love Has Gone starring Bette Davis and Susan Hayward, My Blood Runs Cold opposite Troy Donahue and Bluebeard with Richard Burton.

As a singer, Heatherton had a #24 pop hit with the 1957 Ferlin Husky song Gone in 1972. However, her album The Joey Heatherton Album did not do well on the charts as her single. He appeared nude in an issue of Playboy. He married Lance Rentzel, a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, in 1969. They separated after Rentzel was arrested for exposing himself to a ten-year old girl. They divorced in 1972.
