Alec Guinness de Cuffe was born on April 2, 1914 in Paddington, London, England. At age 86, he died of liver cancer on August 5, 2000 in Midhurst, West Sussex, England. From 1938 until his death, he was married to Merula Salaman. He has a son named Matthew Guinness who later became an actor.

Throughout his entire acting career, Guinness was noted for his performance in numerous films and TV programs which won him several accolades from renowned award giving bodies. Some of his other most notable appearances were in Star Wars, The Comedians, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Smiley's People, and Little Dorrit. 

His appearance in The Lavender Hill Mob won him a Silver Ribbon Award for Best Actor in a Foreign Film. Meanwhile, his appearance in The Prisoner as The Cardinal earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In 1957, he played the role of Col. Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai won Guinness the Academy Award for Best Actor, the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama, the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor, and New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor.
