Ving was born on 12th May 1959 in New York City. His parents were Reather, a home maker and Ernest Rhames, an auto mechanic. His parents were from South Carolina. Irving was named after a famous NBC news reader Irving R. Levine. Rhames grew up in Harlem. He went to the New York’s High School of Performing Arts – this is where he has acquired the acting skills.

In 1984, Irving debuted on Broadway with the play “The Boys of Winter”. It was around 1994 that he started acting in films. Ving first appeared in “The People Under the Stairs”, which was directed by Wes Craven. He appeared in Pulp Fiction as Marsellus Wallace – this is probably the most famous of all his depictions. Ving also appeared in ER, Mission: Impossible of 1996 along with Tom Cruise, a movie that became a very big commercial success. He starred in Con Air in 1997. Ving played the role of Nathan ‘Diamond Dog’ Jones.

For his performance in Don King: Only in America, a 1998 TV series, Rhames earned his first Golden Globe Award as the Best Actor. But Rhames gave away the award to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon as he felt that Jack was the rightful winner. Some of his other works can be seen in American Tragedy, Baby Boy, Holiday Heart, Lilo & Stitch, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead.
