He is best known for his work as a child and teenager in the Broadway musical Raisin, based on the Lorraine Hansberrry drama A Raisin in the Sun, and on the 1970s sitcom Good Times where he played the role of Michael Evans, the youngest member of the Evans family.

On June 28, 2006, he and the former cast members, including Janet Jackson, Jimmie Walker and Bern Nadette Stanis, appeared at the BET Awards.

With his work in Raisin, Carter earned a Tony nomination for Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical). During that time, he also appeared in two Galt McDermot flop musicals: Dude, which earned him the Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Performer, and Via Galactica.
