Gossett Jr. started his career when he was 17 and decided to audition for a school play. He replaced Bill Gunn as Spencer Scott in Broadway’s Take a Giant Step.
His acting career hit the next level when he landed a role for Sidney Poiter’s A Raisin in the Sun in 1961. The same year, he appeared in the original cast of Jean Genet’s The Blacks. The said production is the longest running off-Broadway play of the decade, which runs for 1,408 performances.
He portrayed the role of Fiddle on the 1977 television miniseries Roots, which earned him an Emmy Award.
He played the role of drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, and scored an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
He is the voice behind the Vortigaunts from the video game Half-Life 2. And also played Free Jaffa Leader Gerak in Season 9 of the sci-fi television series Stargate SG-1.
