While he was preparing for Victoria, he was offered a role in the soap opera Shortland Street (1992). He left because he pursued his acting career. Over the next few years, he appeared in several TV commercials and various theatre roles in Wellington. He then moved to Auckland and was offered many guest roles in local shows such as Shark in the Park (1989). He also appeared in the movie Chunuk Bair (1992). It was once titled Chunuck Bay. He had a starring guest role in White Fang (1993).

Karl Urban married Natalie Wihongi, his makeup artist in The Privateers, in September 2004. They have two son, Hunter (November 2000) and Indiana or Indy (January 2005). He serves as a celebrity ambassador for KidsCan, a charity that supports over 16,000 disadvantaged children in New Zealand.
