John Carroll O'Connor was born on August 2, 1924 in Manhattan, New York, USA. He was an alumnus of University of Montana-Missoula. He had been married to Nancy Fields O'Connor, with whom he had a son named Hugh O'Connor (now deceased). On June 21, 2001, O'Connor died of heart attack. He was 76.

In 1972, his appearance on All In The Family won him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy category. The same role won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1978, 1977, 1976 and 1971.

In 1990, he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to the TV industry. On the other hand, his role in In the Heat of the Night won Carroll O'Connor a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama in 1989. The same role also landed him a NAACP Image Award for Best Dramatic Series in 1992 and 1993.
