Sgt. Slaughter started to wrestle when he was still attending Eden Prairie High School. Before he became a wrestler, he joined the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant. During the late 70s, he entered the wrestling scene at American Wrestling Association where he became popular as the Destroyer Mark II.

In 1980, he transferred to the World Wrestling Federation and agreed to play a villainous character as Sgt. Slaughter. He fought legendary wrestlers such as Andre the Giant, The Iron Sheik, and Pat Patterson, among others.

From 1985 to 1990, Slaughter was with AWA. He became AWA America's Heavyweight Champion after defeating Larry Zbyszko, shortly after his comeback in the league.

Upon his return to the WWF, he participated in several Survivor Series and WrestleMania matches. In 1997, Slaughter became the on-air commisioner during an episode of Raw is War. He was known for his Atomic noogie moves which he grinds knuckle to the temple of a seated opponent after a snapmare.
