Willian started his career in 2006 for Corinthians and played for its youth system. During his first season with the team, he made five league appearances and breakthroughs in the following campaigns where he scored twice in 29 matches for the club.
In August 2007, he signed a five-year contract with the Shakhtar Donetsk. During his stint with the team, Shakhtar Donetsk was recognized as champion for several times at the Ukrainian Premier League, Ukrainian Cup, Ukrainian Super Cup, and UEFA Cup. On January 31, 2013, Willian moved to Anzhi Makhachkala.
His brief stint with Anzhi halted when the team chose to transfer their entire squad. Premier League club Chelsea agreed to sign Willian to play for their team.
