Born Raul Jose Trindade Meireles on March 17, 1983 in Porto, Portugal, his father Raul Meireles Sr. who was a former massage therapist from Boavista FC, encouraged him to play football for the team at the age of six. He started his career in the club as a trainee. However, he was loaned to Desportivo das Aves in the Liga Honra where he made his professional debut. He returned to Boavista after two years where he made his Primeira Liga debut.
Because of his great performance, Meireles was brought to the Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto. While in the club, they won three Primeira Liga titles in a row, two Portuguese Cups and three Portuguese Supercups.
In 2010, Raul Meireles moved to Liverpool where he won the 2011 PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award after a very successful first season in the English Premier League.
