Lassana Diarra started playing football when he was young. He joined several youth clubs which include Nantes, Le Mans, and Le Havre. As he went onto his senior career, his skills were further honed with Havre and was given a chance to represent the France U21 squad.

He was recruited by the Chelsea right after leaving Le Havre and known as the new Makélélé. During his stint with the team, he was named as the team's young player of the season in 2005-2006 season.
