Julio Cesar started off his career with Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in 1997. After his eight-year stint with the team, he joined Chievo Verona via Internazionale. When he played for Inter, they won several accolades such as Serie A championship for five consecutive years, Coppa Italia championship for three times, Supercoppa Italiana for four times, UEFA Champions League in 2009-2010, and FIFA Club World Cup in 2010.

He received the Premio Futebol no Mundo award, UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year and ESPN Brasil's best player of the season in 2009. In 2012, he transferred to Queens Park Rangers. While with the team, he was loaned again, this time for Toronto FC in July 2014. Less than a month later, he signed to play for Benfica.
