Cannavaro is considered as one of the greatest defenders of his generation. After playing for Bagnoli for a period of time, he was spotted by some agents to play for Napoli. Later on, he was sold to Parma whom he played with for seven years.

With Parma, he won the 1999 UEFA Cup as well as two Coppa Italias. In summer of 2002, he joined Internazionale with a reported fee of €23 million. After spending two years with Internazionale, he was traded to Juventus in exchange for Fabian Carini. Both players were reported to earn 10 million during that time.

After his two-year stint with Juventus, he transferred to Real Madrid which disappointed a lot of fans. With Madrid, he won the La Liga title in 2006-07 and 2007-07 seasons. His joint venture with Real Madrid and Juventus also earned him the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year. He spent three seasons with Madrid before he moved to Juventus again. He eventually became the head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande.

Fabio is currently married to Daniela Cannavaro. The couple has three children together named Christian (b. 1999), Martina (b. 2001) and Andrea (b. 2004).
