David Beckham is an English former midfielder footballer who has an estimated net worth of $670 million as of March 2021. He debuted with his national team in 1996 at 21 years old and played 115 games and scored 17 goals. Beckham participated in three World Cup in 1998, 2002, and 2006. During his 21-year career, he played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Paris St. Germain, totalizing 718 matches and 223 goals. Beckham won 21 titles, 14 with United, 2 with Real Madrid, 4 with Los Angeles Galaxy, and 1 with Paris St. Germain. Beckham was listed at the top ten of Forbes’ World’s Highest Paid Athletes rankings in 2007 ($33 million), 2008 ($50 million), 2009 ($42 million), 2010 ($43.7 million), 2011 ($46 million), 2012 ($50.6 million), and 2013 ($47.2 million). When he retired, he ranked 7th in the Highest Paid Athletes of All Time with earnings of $800 million as of December 2017.
Beckham was born on May 2, 1975 in Leytonstone, a town in east London in the county of Essex, to David Edward Alan Beckham and Sandra Georgina West. He has two sisters, Joanne Louise and Lynne Georgina. He inherited his parents’ passion for football and showed his talent at an early age. Beckham started playing for local club Ridgeway Rovers at ten, and the next year won the Bobby Charlton Soccer Skills Competition. He played for the Tottenham youth team from 1987 until 1991, when he signed a youth contract with Manchester United at the age of 16, and led the team to win the FA Youth Cup.
Beckham debuted as a professional for Manchester United in 1994 at 19 years old, and that season the team won the FA Community Shield (English Super Cup). In the 1995-96 season, he quickly rose through the coach consideration, took a place in the first team, and carried United to the title in the Premier League, the English FA Cup, and the FA Community Shield. Beckham made his debut for the England national team in 1996 in the World Cup qualification when he was 21. The next season the team won the League, and Beckham was awarded the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year. In 1997-98, Manchester United obtained the FA Community Shield and he signed a five-year contract for $2.5 million a year. The following season Manchester United won the European Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the FA Community Shield, with Beckham playing vital roles. The squad also got the League in the 1999-00, 2000-01, and 2002-03 seasons, in addition to the Intercontinental Cup in 2000.
While performing for Manchester United, Beckham's international presence was also important. Following a disappointing 1998 World Cup, he was widely acclaimed in 2001, already being captain of the national team since 2000, after a goal against Greece that allowed England to qualify for the 2002 World Cup (where England lost against Brazil in Quarter-Finals), and finished as the runner up for the FIFA World Player of the Year award. In May 2002, Beckham signed a new deal for $6.25 million annually, which took his total earnings to around $15 million per year.
Beckham left Manchester United in 2003 as the second longest serving player to join Real Madrid. The transfer was made for more than $41 million to the English team and he signed a four-year contract for around $7 million per year plus bonuses. During that time, the team won the Spanish Super Cup in 2003 and the League in the 2006-07 season. In the 2006 World Cup, England lost against Portugal in Quarter-Finals and Beckham left the national team after he captained the squad for 59 matches.
In 2007, he joined Los Angeles Galaxy with a five-year deal for $35 million annually. Beckham was awarded the Mayor League Soccer Player of the Year twice and the team won two Supporters Shield (2009-10 and 2010-11) and two MLS Cup (2010-11 and 2011-12), though in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons he played on loan for AC Milan.
In 2013, Beckham signed his last contract as a footballer with Paris St. Germain. The team obtained the French League and he donated his $5.3 million salary to local children's charity. In 2014, Beckham exercised his option to create a new team to participate in the United States Major League Soccer for $25 million, which was included in the contract that he signed to play at Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. Nowadays, he owns the majority of that new club named Inter Miami CF and is the President of Soccer Operations. Inter Miami started to compete in the Mayor League Soccer on March 1, 2020. Besides, Beckham owns four companies that manage his image rights and brands associated with high-profile sports and entertainment icons: DB Ventures had earnings for £8,979,283 after taxes in 2019 (more than $12 million), Seven Global had earnings for $15,943,000 in 2018, Footwork Productions has investments for £30,875,002 ($42.5 million), and Beckham Brand has investments for £4,419,547 ($6 million).
In May 2020, Beckham signed a deal for at least $19.78 million over five years with Guild Esports. A month after the agreement, he invested $319,000 in the company to become the fourth-largest shareholder with 24.5 million shares. Guild fields teams in Rocket League and FIFA video games and in September 2020 went public on the London Stock Exchange, raising $26 million through its initial public offering. The Guild stock is valued at £6.02 as of March 26, 2021, and for this reason, the 24.5 million shares owned by Beckham are worth $203 million. In November 2020, he signed a three-year deal for more than $55 million with EA Sports to feature in FIFA 21. He has made several sponsorships and endorsement deals throughout his life, among which stands out the lifetime one with Adidas for $160 million in 2003 that in addition includes a percentage of the earnings on all of his branded Adidas products.
Since 1999, Beckham is married to Victoria Adams, an English singer, fashion designer, and businesswoman who became famous in the 1990s as a member of the music group Spice Girls. The couple has four children, Brooklyn (1999), Romeo James (2002), Cruz David (2005), and Harper Seven (2011). They have a real state portfolio that includes a 10,000 square feet apartment in the One Thousand Museum tower in Miami bought for $27.5 million in 2020; a seven-bedroom house in Holland Park, London, purchased for $43 million in 2013; a farmhouse in Cotswolds, a rural area in the south-central and southwest England, that was paid $8.5 million for in 2016 and converted into a mansion; an apartment in the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, acquired for $5 million in 2009; a seven bedroom luxury retreat in Bargemon, a commune in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France, bought for $2 million in 2003 and valued at $3.3 million in 2016; and a villa in the Palm Jumeirah island, near the coast of Dubai, bought for $1.8 million in 2002 and valued at $11 million in 2008.
