Peggy Fleming is one of the most well-known figure skaters in America and she has an estimated net worth of $8 million. Born Peggy Gail Fleming on July 27, 1948 in San Jose, California, she began skating at the age of nine on the advice of her father when the family moved to Cleveland. She finished 4th place at the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. In 1967, she was named Athlete of the Year by ABC’s Wide World of Sports. She earned five U.S. titles from 1964 to 1968, three World titles from 1966 to 1968, and the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France. Her award was the only gold medal that the U.S. Olympic team won in the 1968 Winter Games. She was named 1968 Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press. In 1983, she was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame as a charter member.
In the 1993 national sports study conducted by the Associated Press, Fleming was ranked as the 3rd most popular athlete in America behind fellow Olympians Mary Lou Retton and Dorothy Hamill. In 1998, she was diagnosed with breast cancer that was luckily detected in the early stages. She had a successful surgery and since then she became a breast cancer activist who recommends not procrastinating and advocates for early detection. She has been a television commentator on figure skating for over 20 years, including several Winter Olympic Games.
During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Peggy Fleming is mentioned very prominently in the Peanuts comic strip, with the character of Snoopy having a crush on her. In 2007, she appeared as a judge in the movie Blades of Glory. On February 22, 2011, Trey Anastasio Band performed a song about her titled "Peggy".
